Traveling along Highway 34 out of Waldport there is a road sign to Five Rivers, Lobster Valley, and the Fisher Bridge that warranted investigation. With the help of YahotsWalker, I decided to make a caching run to celebrate my 64th Birthday and left behind four new caches
Arriving in Fisher, we encountered a pretty red wooden covered bridge crossing E. Crab Creek, one of the contributors to the Five Rivers (Alder, Buck, Crab, Cougar, & Cherry Creeks.) The bridge is known by several names, i.e. Fisher School and Five Rivers Covered Bridge, the first name indicating the close proximity to the community’s school building. The first bridge was built in 1919 by a group of farmers that cut the large trees with broadaxes and enclosed with lumber cut at the Olsen brothers’ saw mill. The community came to the rescue of the original bridge during the 1970’s when it was slated for demolition and then it was rebuilt in 2004.
Fisher was named for the now-rare, fur-bearing, cat sized animal that inhabited the region in early days, fisher Martes pennanti. The Fisher post office was established in March 1892 and closed in September 1942. This rural and picturesque location in the rugged foothills provides a major watershed of the Siuslaw Forest.
CONGRATULATIONS to putterer for the FTF!
