Known to the 16th Anti Aircraft Regiment as site H2, four heavy
octagonal emplacements and a command post were built near the old
Women’s prison site in 1942 at a cost of £16,993. Each of the
four 3.7-inch guns had ready-ammunition lockers for the complete
one-piece rounds. Reserves of ammunition were drawn from a depot
converted from the old Kau Pt Battery on the next promontory of the
peninsula. The guns were removed in 1944.
In the compound was also a camp for 109 personnel, including
crew shelter, toilet and store room.
The battery, also known as Halswell Anti Aircraft site, is a
short walk from the Massey Memorial by following the track up the
hill.
The cache container is a pill bottle (in a green parka) that
only fits a small log sheet. You must sign the log sheet to claim a
find. Please put back the container carefully and re-hide the cache
as found.
The track is popular with walkers at weekends. Watch out for
muggles when retrieving and re-hiding the cache as they can appear
without warning from any direction!
If you walk for another 15 minutes up the hill and along the old
military road, you will reach the historic site of Kau Pt Battery,
where another cache is waiting to be discovered.
Parking is available on Massey Road opposite the start of the
track to the Massey Memorial.
