Geocache Description:

Old Escalante irrigation tunnel.

This irrigation tunnel was constructed about 1902 to replace the original canal which did not have enough altitude to irrigate the south part of town and what is now the south fields. The 380 foot tunnel was constructed from both ends and met in the center. It took about 2 years to complete. The canal and tunnel was used for about 80 years then replaced with a pressurized system. I can remember floating on an inner tube down the canal, through the tunnel and into town on hot summer days. Most people growing up at the time probably remember doing this as well.
