Geocache Description:

Briggs Well

There are a lot of stories about this site. This is one of them.

Larry Briggs was a mechanic and an all round inventor. In the early 1900's he decided he would become an "oil man".

Back in 1905 Larry Briggs rounded up all the money and investors he could find to drill some wells looking for oil in this part of Michigan. He had enough money to drill 12 wells. This site is the 12th and last try! The first 11 were dry holes. He continued to move North after each attempt. He stated, "I know this area has oil and gas! We must keep trying!" " I can smell it!". This site was another dry hole! Heart broken and penniless, he packed up and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His Oil Days were over! He didn't even have enough money to buy a train ticket. Also, some of his investors wanted to Tar & Feather him!!
Just 12 years later and 5 miles north of this site was the largest Oil and Gas find in Michigan!! About, $2,000,000,000.00 worth! & Still pumping out oil and gas.

But, don't feel too sorry for Briggs. In Milwaukee, he met up with Harold Stratton in 1908. Both fellows were small engine mechanics and tinkerers. They worked on and invented the first small engines in the world. Then they formed the famous Briggs & Stratton Company!! The company is now worth: $969,000,000.00 at a stock price of $20.42. (BGG Ticker.)As of 7/1/2011.
