On the other side of the bridge is the west entrance to roman
colchester it is known as the Balkern gate because it was 'baulked'
or filled in, probably in the late Roman period. This may be the
reason the Balkerne Gate is so well preserved. It was only
uncovered around a hundred years ago. Archaeologists took the
decision to unblock the gate allowing people to walk through one of
the archways. was built in the first and second centuries AD, there
were five main entrances into the town incorporated into it. This
one, facing west, Northgate in the north, Eastgate, Headgate and
Southgate. A smaller postern gate, known as Duncan's Gate, was
situated in the north wall. The other gates were gradually removed
as Colchester gave way to the need for greater vehicle access. This
view looks west into what was the guardroom.
