This cache should be a fairly quick, enjoyable park and grab surrounded by a lot of local history. There is a log and room for a few small trade items.
THE CURRITUCK SHOOTING CLUB
In the 1850’s, wealthy businessmen from the northern states were traveling to this spot to hunt this area’s plentiful flocks of geese and ducks. In1857, these rich and famous businessmen chartered the Currituck Shooting Club in a New York City lawyer’s office. For the sum of one dollar per acre, they bought 3,100 acres of beach and marsh land surrounding this very spot. They built the first clubhouse very near here the same year. Little did this group know that within the next few years the clubhouse would be nearly destroyed by Civil War action. In 1879 the second clubhouse was built on the same spot. Over the coming years the club and clubhouse weathered many storms, good times and bad, and has remained one of the most prominent hunting clubs in the country. As this wild and open country of sounds, marshes, sand dunes and the sea was discovered and developed, the hunting gradually declined. No longer was the Currituck sound a favored haunt of the huge flocks of waterfowl. People were discovering the secrets of the Currituck Outer Banks though and with that came development. The sprawling Currituck Club that you see to the west is situated on some of the original 3,100 acres that was purchased from Abraham Baum in 1857. This land has been well preserved by the Currituck Shooting Club and is now one of the premiere vacation locations in the world. On March 24th 2003, the Currituck Shooting Club’s clubhouse was completely destroyed by an accidental fire. This clubhouse had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and was a tremendous loss to the community. There are only about thirteen of the original 3,100 acres that remain set aside for the surviving original buildings that once surrounded the clubhouse.
This cache was placed here under the condition that the landscaping not be disturbed. There is no bushwhacking required at all.
Congrats to OBXNOMAD for the F.T.F Enjoy the smoothie!
