12 Squadron was formed on 14 February 1915 at Netheravon. Its fox emblem was taken from its full squadron crest, which in turn came from the fact that this squadron was the only one to use the Fairey Fox biplane. The motto Leads The Field is because the Fairey Fox bomber was faster than the fighters then in service.
12 Sqn arrived at Binbrook from Finningley in early July 1940 flying Fairy Battles, but converted to Wellington bombers in Nov 1940. In April 1941 12 Sqn sent 28 aircraft on the first of the bomber raids targetting Cologne. In 1942 12 Sqn moved to Wickenby and converted to Lancasters while concrete runways were constructed at Binbrook, returning there on 24 Sep 1945. It was disbanded in 1961 but reformed in 1962 at Coningsby with the Vulcan B2 Bomber. In 1964 it moved to Cottesmore, staying until 1967 when the primacy of the Royal Navy in generating Britain's nuclear deterrent began to take its toll on the Vulcan Sqns.
