North Carolina Tarheels

National Champions 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009

The Tarheels were denied the Championship in 2008 getting knocked out in the semis. The seiors decided to come back this year to give it one more shot at the Championship!

Ranked as the preseason # 1 Team everyone had them picked to win it all. They had a perfect record going into conference play to lose their first two conference games to Boston College and Wake Forest. After the 0 and 2 start they went on a roll to only lose late in the season at Maryland.

On the last Sunday of the season the Conference Championship was on the line....they had to play threir Rivals the Dookies in Chapel Hill. Carolina went on to win the game and sweep the Dookies again!

During the conference tournament, Point Guard Ty Lawson had an injured toe and couldn't play! The team struggled but won the Opening game then lost in the semis to Florida State.

On to the NCAA Tournament:

Despite the Tarheels loss in the conference semis they still were rewarded with a Number 1 seed in the Tournament. With Lawson still out the Tarheels rolled in their first game over Radford. Then played the tough LSU Tigers which gave the Tarheels a game before they pulled away late.

In the Sweet 16 the Tarheels jumped out quick on Gonzaga and Oklahoma and rolled to easy wins! This team was focused and on their way to Detroit for the National Championship.

In the Final Four, Carolina had Villanova out of the Big East which was maybe the toughest conference in 2008/09. The Tarheels had another quick start and put Villanova in a hole and would never let them back in the game.

In the Champiponship game, North Carolina was to play Michigan State. A team they had beaten Badly earlier in the season. But there were going to be 70,000 fans making this basically a Michigan State home game. Again the Tarheels jumped out quickly getting up by 21 points after 10 mins in the game. At the end of the first half Carolina had a 23 point lead, the biggest ever in a Championship game.

The 2nd half the Tarhhels came out a little cold in their shooting, but Michigan State couldn't cut into the lead. Then late in the game Michigan State had a little run and cut the lead to 13....but would get no closer! The Tarheels would go on to win their 5th National Championship!

Why is the sky Carolina Blue?

A newspaper reporter from the Charlotte Observer was traveling down the road one day, when he saw a young boy being attacked by a dog. He then saw another boy run over and save the first boy from the attacking dog.

The reporter then stopped his car got his laptop out and started writing a story for the paper. He wrote the headlina as "Courageous Tarheel Youth Saves Friend From Vicious Attack Dog!"

He then called the boy over to show him the headline.

The boy looked on and replied to the reporter "Sir, That is a nice headline, BUT, I am Not a Tarheel fan!"

The Reporter said "No Problem". Hit delete and changed the Headline to,"Wolfpack teen saves boy from Dog".

The boy looked on Again, and replied "Thats nice too Sir, But I am not a Wolfpack fan either".

The Newspaper Reporter responded, "Son, You mean to tell me you live here in the Great state of North Carolina and You're not a Tarheel or Wolfpack fan? Who is it you do like?"

The boy replied, "Sir, I am a Duke fan".

The Reporter replied, "No Problem". Hit delete on his laptop and wrote the NEw headline. "Arrogant Yankee Bastard Kills Family Pet"
