Geocache Description:

Multi in historic downtown Bailey's Hollow. Watch for poison ivy ! It was dormant at the time I placed the cache, but Spring has a way of resurrecting the stuff.

Welcome to the mini tour of Dalton, PA. formerly known as Bailey's Hollow. In the late 1860's, Dr. J.C. Miles of Bailey's Hollow, among others, felt that the name sounded unbecoming for a town of increasing prominence. The railroad would soon choose whether to run through Bailey Hollow or Waverly, and locals felt the 'hollow' name might chase the rail line away. Except for the bank and post office, the buildings you see around you are from the early to middle 1800's. The lot (where you will find part1) hosting the memorial plaque used to be home to three triplexes that were lost to a fire in the 1940's. The trolley lines used to run next to where the tanning salon is now.The old PO is that pink and blue building to the West, down Main St. The Pharmacy was originally a General store and the blue duplex hosted the PO for a number of years until the new building was built. The empty lot behind you (across Main st.) is where the famous Dalton House hotel used to be. Due to mismanagement and neglect by several previous owners, and the unfortunate decision to put the building on the historic register, which made attempting to make improvements fraught with red tape and enormously expensive, it became unfeasible to restore or even renovate the building. The McGrath's Pub building was old in 1855 and was probably built around the turn of the 19th century. The Memorial clock and granite plaque were a donation by the former Dalton Baptist church. The congregation sold the church building (which can be seen at the end of Willow St.) to Parker Baptist Church. For a more complete history, just across from McGrath's is the library, where you can read the History of Dalton and see some before and after photos. Now, enter those coords and go see Fred. ********Congratulations to gargoyle18 on FTF!********* ********Congrats to tsharkrider on your first multi!*****
