THE TOWN OF WARREN, SETTLED BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, is known
for its picturesque landscape, stately homes and "The Tomb Of The
Twelve Nuns." "It was a place I visited in my teens," says Sharon
Kolbek, of Bridgewater. "We would cruise around, tell scary stories
and go to the Tomb Of The Twelve Nuns. Whenever somebody would find
a strange place to visit, we'd have to go there."How the name came
about is a mystery. The mausoleum was the grave of the Hofheimer
Family, who in 1915 purchased the land along with a nearby copper
mine. The patriarch of the family, Nathan Hofheimer, was a founder
of General Motors and resided in the house which is now the
municipal building.
The mausoleum is located behind the municipal building near the
baseball fields, and according to George Bebbington, the local
historian, no one knows whether or not there were ever any bodies
interred at the site.
The town recently sold the structure for $1 in hopes of removing
it because of complaints of it being a "lover's lane." The
mausoleum was so solid only one stone was removed, and here it
stands today.
"As teenagers we weren't interested in the history of the
place," says Kolbek. "It was a dirt lane, you'd go late at night,
usually in the rain. We were just a bunch of lunatics who wanted to
get scared." for its picturesque landscape, stately homes and "The
