Geocache Description:

Easy drive by cache on this bridge to somewhere

This one way bridge was built in 1977. When we asked why was a one way bridge on such a popular highway we were told that it was expected that the valley would be flooded to a higher level and that this bridge would just be to just a few farms and the major traffic route would be on the other side of the lake so it was described as a "bridge to nowhere". Now it has become just as popular as the highway on the other side of Lake Dunstan to the Lindis Pass. Below the bridge and off the side road is a great place to launch an inflatable dinghy (if the level of the river is right) and let the kids have some fun. Many people picnic and stay overnight here in their campervans. There are some years when the river has no water winter or summer and other times a raging torrent as can be seen by the mud and silt on the banks. The cache is 200ml sistema container. There was a natural bee hive not far from the cache but we suspect that the varroa mite may have wiped out its residents. http://tvnz.co.nz/sunday-news/honey-bees-under-attack-5847035
