The church is situated in the centre of the village, adjacent to
the Chequers public house, inside a brick enclosure off the
Heybridge to Tolleshunt D’Arcy road. There are some traces of
Norman origin but the church is mainly 13th century, although it
was much restored in the Victorian period. Inside the church is a
large folder of its history.
The Chequers Inn dates back to the late 15th century and has
remained virtually untouched. The pub's name came about from its
relationship with the neighbouring church and the collector of
taxes. As early as 1600, the tax collector would use a board of
black and white squares to assist in tallying up the monies brought
to him by the people of the village whose property was owned by the
church. As each person made their payment, he would place their
coins on a square. Once every square had been filled, he knew his
task was completed.
The Chequers pub is “Colchester & North East Essex Camra Pub
of the Year” for 2008 and for 2009.
The footpath continues in a pleasant walk to Goldhanger
creek
