Carnroe – Access 8 on the Lower Bann

Up river from Carnroe is the vow ferry. It was once a strategic river crossing and was protected by the Norman motte of Drumalorchan, now destroyed by quarrying. On a nearby hill is the ancient Vow Graveyard. In 1757 this was the site of the ordination of Reverend William Martin, the first Reformed Presbyterian (or Covenanter) minister in Ireland (we also have a cache here called “Vow”, GC1H5CE).
In 1835 it was recorded that the ferry at the Vow brought passengers across the River Bann for a “ha’penny”. The ferryman had to pay rent to the London Mercer’s Company.

A very beautiful spot on the Lower Bann, hidden away from the road with fantastic views across the lock and weir.

Leave the Vow Road at co-ordinates N55* 00.100, W006* 34.035. Follow the lane towards the river, there is a small car park near the lock. Use the small gate to access the river and picnic benches.

Please be very aware of the deep water here and watch your little cachers carefully!
