Geocache Description:

Cache is one of three in the ‘Round Robin’ set all located in The Brown Robin Nature Reserve.

The nature reserve was given to the Cumbria Wildlife Trust by Miss Mary Widdup in 1977. It is a mix of woodland and grassland. A number of information boards around the reserve give details of the permitted footpaths and information about the flora and fauna which can be found within the reserve. A map of the reserve and further information can be found at www.cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk

This cache is situated in an enclosed grassland area which is sometimes grazed by cattle and sheep. The grasslands have had no fertiliser added to them for many years. The grazing of the area by the animals encourages and maintains the diversity of plant species. Keep an eye out for Roe Deer as they have frequently been seen about the reserve.

We usually access the reserve through the Netherwood Hotel grounds (with whom Cumbria Wildlife Trust have a pedestrian access agreement only – NO PARKING). The ‘Round Robin’ cache walk starts from here in a clockwise fashion, although the caches can of course be done in any order. To access the reserve walk up the main drive to the Netherwood Hotel and follow track off to left on reaching the carparking area towards a row of cottages. The stile into the reserve is just beyond the cottages.

Other access points to the reserve are from the Cumbria Grand Hotel grounds (with whom the Wildlife Trust have an agreement for parking and pedestrian access through the boundary wall) or from B5271 Grange to Lindale road. Limited parking is available in a layby on the bend approx 1km from the roundabout in Grange.

The cache is a small plastic box full of child friendly swaps when placed.

This is one of our favourite ‘off the beaten track walks’ – hope you like it too!
