A beautiful waterfall (semi-seasonal) at the end of a long rolling hike, then down a rock scramble.
The land at Point Reyes National Seashore comes from more than three hundred miles away, having travelled along the edge of the North American plate at the rate of two inches per year. Along an 8.5-mile round trip hike from the Palomarin trailhead at N37° 56.044’ W122° 44.816’, you will encounter different formations of once-volcanic rock, some of which shows evidence of having been formed underwater. This particular feature is a waterfall that flows over some volcanic rock formations.
Alamere Falls is best viewed in the spring, or after any heavy rain. Above you, it takes a nice 40’ drop off of a cliff. Below, it goes directly into the ocean! You can reach it by following an “unmaintained” (but officially signed) trail spurring off from the Coast Trail a N37° 57.234’ W122° 46.687’. Keep your hands in close to you; the poison oak crowds the trail in places. The last bit down to the upper falls is a steep rock scramble, and you will want to be careful on the descent.
Hiking information
To claim this earthcache:
1. Have someone (or your camera’s self-timer) take a photo of you at the base of the falls with your GPSr in hand and post it with your log.
2. Take a picture of your GPSr with some pillow basalt along the trail. (You will need to be able to recognize pillow basalt when you see it, so come prepared!)
3. Send a message to me describing the horizontally-“cut” rocks in the area of the falls, and how you think they were formed.
Please practice responsible hiking in our National Seashore.
Stay on trails, leave no trace, and don’t approach or feed wildlife.
Please be careful near the cliffs above the beach!
