Access 1 on the Lower Bann.
Toome on the shores of Lough Neagh, is one of the earliest hunter-gatherer sites in Ireland, with archaeological evidence naming it as one of the first human settlements on the island! Activity on the site seems to date back to the 7th century BC and shows clear evidence of what could be the first farming to have taken place in the country.
Toome is situated at one of the four crossings over the River Bann and was once defended by a castle that was part of a chain of forts along the Bann.
The first bridge over the Lower Bann was built in 1785 by the imcumbant Lord O'Neill of Antrim. Built of stone with nine arches and measuring over 300ft long it had a toll gate on the western side. Before 1785, the crossing would have had to be made by boat or by a bridge further upstream at Portglenone. The placename Toome derives from the Gaelic word "Tuiam" that can be translated as burial ground.
You can see the eel traps downriver from here which trap the eels before they enter Lough Beg – a National Nature Reserve.
Car parking available.
