The first Mount Rat School opened in 1878 in the Wesleyan Chapel with just a handful of students but with increasing enrolments a Government school was built three years later, near the old Mount Rat Hotel, of which a sign on the Maitland-Minlaton Road at the Port Victoria-Curramulka crossroad is the last remaining reminder.
The school was transferred to new premises on the property of Mr T.C. Reade, who had borne the whole expense of this stone building which can be seen nearby! This was used for several decades until its closure in September 1951, with the advent of school buses!Originally contained
