Obama ancestry runs through Fayette County
Genealogists researching the family of Barack Obama’s mother have discovered that a number of relatives emigrated from Ireland in the 19th century and settled on land in several southern Ohio counties, including right here in Fayette County. In rural Pickaway County, 30minutes south of Columbus, word has spread that two of Obama’s ancestors are buried nearby. Roger Kearney, the family’s self-appointed historian, came across the Obama relationship when reading an article that said he is a descendant of an Irish immigrant named Fulmoth Kearney. “Fulmoth! I’ve got him in my database,” he said. Kearney, 72, figured there was a relation because he had seen the unusual name on Ohio property records from the 1800s found during his own genealogy research. Kearney then contacted ancestry.com’s Megan Smolenyak, the genealogist who had traced Obama’s family back to Moneygall, Ireland, for more information. Ancestors of Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, staked land in Ross, Fayette and Pickaway counties in the 1800s, records showed. Kearney, a retired technology director, recently visited the grave of Phebe Kearney, Obama’s great-great-great-great-grandmother, in the southeastern part of Fayette County. Kearney calculated that Obama is his fourth cousin, three times removed.

The "SQ" in the cache name above signifies Spirit Quest, a project by the Northwest Ohio Geocachers to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial gardens. This cache is part of that series created by NWOGEO members to highlight cemeteries or memorial gardens in the area. Please be respectful of the area, and observe their rules and posted hours which are typically sunrise to sunset.
For more information, goto: http://www.NWOGEO.org/SpiritQuest/
The cache is located within the cemetery. You will have to open the gate to enter. Please make sure the gate gets closed when you leave and be respectful to the area. There is plenty of parking nearby. As long as the ground is dry you may drive back to the cemetery. This is my aunt and uncle's property and if we respect their land, the cache will remain there.
