Geocache Description:

The coordinates above will bring you to an area where you can experience the beauty of Crescent Lake, However, in order to log this EarthCache as a “find”, you must learn a bit more about the lake, and how it came to be here.

This is not your typical geocache, it is an Earthcache, you will not find a "cache container" rather, an Earthcache is designed to bring you to a geological feature. See (visit link) for further details.

Crescent Lake is considered geologically to be a “Glacial Lake”.

Glacial Lake
According to Wikipedia:
A glacial lake is a lake with origins in a melted glacier.
A retreating glacier often leaves behind large deposits of ice in hollows between drumlins or hills. As the ice age ends, these will melt to create lakes. These lakes are often surrounded by drumlins, along with other evidence of the glacier such as moraines, eskers and erosional features such as striations and chatter marks.

Crescent Lake
Again, according to Wikipedia:
Crescent Lake was formed when glaciers carved out deep valleys during the last ice age. Initially, this deep valley drained into Indian Creek valley and then into the Elwha River.

Approximately 8,000 years ago, a great landslide from the mountains above dammed Indian Creek, and the deep valley filled with water until it was more than 620 feet deep, to become Lake Crescent. Many geologists believe that Lake Crescent and nearby Lake Sutherland formed at the same time, but became separated by this landslide.

The lake's waters have very little nitrogen. This limits the growth of phytoplankton, tiny plants (like algae) that float in lake waters. Without them, the water stays clear. In some places you might see as far down as 60 feet. Clarity and reflect¬ing light give Lake Crescent its stun¬ning blue-green color. Its protected waters are home to fish like the Beardslee and Crescenti trout, two types of fish.
