Geocache Description:

This cache is well hidden on the RX Class No 231 train Kadina's Victoria Square. A park is dear to me as I have some wonderful memory's playing on the train and in the park lands with my niece and nephews who have all celebrated birthdays here. The train was home to a cache previously by Team Ermalesh, but had been archived. Given the beauty of the park and such a great spot to stop and enjoy a picnic or just watch the world go by, I decided to put the place back on the geocaching map.

Victoria Park is a large open area in the center of town with many facilities as listed here: • BBQ (Electric) • Disabled access • Disabled access public toilets • Dogs off-leash exercise • Lawn - grassed area • Parking (free) • Picnic Tables • Power access • Seating Other features in the park include a memorial for the heroes that served during World War II and those that served in Malaysia, Korea and Vietnam. Les we forget. The monuments include a memorial arch in the north western corner of the park and a war gun in honor of the service women the served Defence Forces during World War II 1939 – 1945. And of course the APEX EXPRESS The RX Class No 231 was built by Walkers Ltd. in Maryborough Queensland. It first entered service on 7 July 1915 and withdrawn on 7 June 1967 after 1,575,713 kilometres, has been a feature of Kadina’s town playground since 4 July 1970 which was not without one last hitch. “Gangers ran a spur line across the old Adelaide road in the direction of Hay Street. From there, they had connected a few sections of rail line, sleepers attached, that we lifted with a mobile crane and set up in front of the train for relaying.” The temporary line had to be packed underneath with dirt to keep it level while tractors were used to move the train to the end of the new line. The process was repeated over and over as the train slowly traveled up the middle of Hay Street. “It took all day to move it from the old line to Graves street.” After nearly losing the train off the line coming down the slight incline by the now Department of Ag building, “the old girl” had one last adventure in store before making it to her new home. In their haste to finish the job in the failing light, too tight a turn was laid at the corner of the park and the train derailed. It is reported that Sergeant Norcock of Kadina Police wasn’t too pleased to have a steam train blocking off his main street. After jacking her back on track the train made it to the park and the mammoth 12-hour shift came to an end. Foundations were poured later in the year and it was settled into its current location. RX No. 231 was put in place when it was still a working train, but has since been “scrapped on the spot” Many of the locals spent hours of their childhood playing on this train and now it’s your turn, good luck with your hunt.
