Geocache Description:

Maklike mikro in 'n oop park in Heidelberg
Easy micro in an open park in Heidelberg

For English, see further on.

In a small park on the corner of H.F. Verwoerd Street and Fenter Street in Heidelberg is an interesting structure. As can be seen on the photograph, it is dome-shaped and built of stone.

This structure has existed for as long as I can remember, and is probably very old. It has fascinated me from a very young age, but I could never find out exactly what it is. I suspect it was built to protect a fountain, which would make sense if one notices how wet the area always is.

Added later: It turns out this structure is much older. According to BruceTP's research the Boers built a "bakoond" over their water fountain to hide it from the British forces during the Second War of Independence. In this way, they safe-guarded their supply of water.
