Geocache Description:

A multi in the area once known as Pennydale. The objective of this cache is to show you around Pennydale, and to help revive the picturesque name of the locality. It is a pretty easy drive around suburban streets, although you will have to park and walk to a couple of the waypoints.

UPDATE
Well what do you know?
Eight years after I placed this cache, it seems other people agree with my thoughts about restoring the name of Pennydale. The Pennydale Residents Action Group was formed in 2017, and is supported by a broad base of volunteers and an online social media group that has more than 540 members. Community discussion via social media resolved to reclaim the name Pennydale, which applied to this locality for the entire second half of the Twentieth Century. The intention was to draw attention to the distinctive neighbourhood character and to seek to retain it into the future.
"By changing our suburb name to Pennydale, we give our unique section of Bayside a unique identity that the residents can all stand behind and feel proud about."
The Bayside City Council has asked the State Government to formally establish the name of "Pennydale" to this area.

It is a little known fact that the area of Cheltenham lying between Bay Road (to the north), Jack Road (to the west), Park Road (to the south) and the Frankston railway line, was not that long ago known as Pennydale. It had its own Post Office which closed as recently as 1999. Commemorating Edwin Thomas Penny, a Moorabbin Shire councillor (1903-08), this name was given to a local post office branch in Bay Road in 1956 to avoid confusion with Highett and Cheltenham.

Pennydale was originally named after the Penny family who settled the area in the late 1800s.The only remaining physical evidence that I can find that the name Pennydale ever existed is a small park in Olympic Avenue which bears the name Pennydale Park.I hope this cache will go a little bit further in reminding people outside the immediate area about this little piece of local history.

The clues are located at the four corners of Pennydale, and a couple of interesting places within its boundaries.

Clue 1.

The initial coordinates will locate you near a corner, and there is a power pole there with a yellow identification label. The digits are ABCDEFG

The next clue is located at  S37° 57.(A+B)(E-F)(F+G)   E145° 03.A(B+E)(D-E)

Clue 2.

Here you will find a new pedestrian waiting area adjacent to the pedestrian/bike path crossing.
There are long wooden seats with metal frames here. HJK = 135 x number of seats.

The next Clue is located at S37° 57.(H+G)AB  E145° 02.B(D+E)G

Clue 3.

You will not be able to park here as it is too dangerous, so park nearby and walk back. At this location, you will find a bluestone wall and a sign referring to a High Gas Pressure facility which is offset at LM feet N inches.

The next clue is located at S37° 57.(L+M)95 E145° 02.N52

Clue 4.

Park anywhere convenient. This little strip of shops once contained the Pennydale Post Office, which was located at 360 Bay Road, now a hairdressing salon. Wander along the shops until you find a set of mosaics. One of these mosaics contains a group of insects. How many insects (butterflies, beetles etc) are depicted in the mosaic? This number will be P.

The next clue is located at S37° 57.P(P+D)8 E145° 02.(P+P)J3

Clue 5.

You have now pretty much circumnavigated Pennydale, depending on the direction you arrived from. This waypoint requires you to enter the locality, and you will start to get a feel for the area.
When you arrive at this location, you will see a small playground, and towards the back is a red and yellow spinning object. How many seats does it have? That will be R.

Now you must go to S37° 57.(R+G)(R+D)(R+N-A) E145° 02.JNN

Clue 6

Here you will find a sign with two dates on it. Subtract the earlier year from the latter to get ST.

The cache is located at  S37° 57. (T-1)(D-1)5   E145° 02.DTS

The Cache

The cache is a camouflaged jumbo bison.
Be careful to watch for muggles passing by car or on foot.
