Geocache Description:

In the early 1970’s a Taiwanese man named Min Kao came to the University of Tennessee to pursue graduate studies in electrical engineering. Some key factors in his decision were his brother being in school at nearby Vanderbilt, and an assistantship that helped pay his tuition and books. He earned his masters in electrical engineering in 1975, then followed it with a Ph.D. in 1977. He then worked for various electronics manufacturers, including Teledyne, Magnavox, and King Radio. At King, a giant in the aircraft radio market (visit link) he met and worked with Gary Burrell. Eventually Kao and Burrell joined forces to form their own electronics business. The success of that business led to the building recently constructed on the corner of Cumberland Avenue and Estabrook Road, for which Kao donated 12.5 million dollars (and another 5 million for endowed scholarships).

Initially, Burrell’s and Kao’s company was called ProNav, but shortly they changed its name to reflect the first three letters of the first names of the partners – Garmin! Indeed, Kao was on the team that developed the very first GPS navigation device ever certified by the FAA! This cache is placed to honor Kao, the building named after him, which you can see just west of the cache site, Garmin, and geocaching itself, a sport that Kao made possible.

The closest parking is a UT staff parking lot. Beware of ticket writers should you choose to park there during weekdays. The cache is not far off of the sidewalk. BYOP. You do not have to go down into the creek, or stray more than a couple of feet off of the sidewalk.

When I first placed this cache, the name was simply "left bracket Garmin right bracket", where the right bracket is ">". In HTML code, the brackets signify "Begin". When I revised the coordinates, the system would not let me retain the brackets, and still will not, so I had to change the name to continue to signify that this is where it all began.
