Holwell Hyde Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Twanged Atom: This was a lovely cache to set up and see being used over the last 16 years (!!!!). Sadly the terrain has changed and the hide was becoming compromised, resulting in the ammo box cache obviously being taken at some point. Living a little further away now and working in the opposite direction made it more difficult to drop in and keep an eye on things too.
I’ll see about setting up another multi nearer home sometime.
Little Red has been left in his hidey hole for the time being; guardian of Howell Hyde for a while yet. Pop in and say hello if you’re passing.

Geocache Description:

Short multi-cache just off Blackfan Road.

Blue's gone AWOL so Red is back (or will be within the week!). Following some feedback I have modified this cache slightly to allow larger numbers on our little helper! You are now looking for a little helper dressed in red (again) rather than blue.

The first coordinates take you to a signpost near the start of Cole Green Way, a popular route towards Hertford which follows the course of the old Hertford & Welwyn Junction Railway.
It was opened in 1858 and built to connect the county town of Hertford to the Great Northern Mainline railway running between London and Edinburgh and you can still see a number of features along the route, including platforms and numerous bridges. It runs through the villages of Cole Green and Hertingfordbury, conveniently close to the Cowper Arms at Letty Green and also has a number of other caches along its route! The line was closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts, having been largely superseded by the Hertford loop line and is now a bridleway.

Getting back to the cache, the signpost is the source of all the information you need to get to the next stage of this multicache.

The next coordinates are N 51’ (A).50(B ) W 000’ 10.0(C)1
Where:
A= 50 minus the distance to Stanborough.
B = Total of the 3 digits showing the distance to Peartree.
C= Total of the 3 digits showing the distance to Letty Green added to the distance to Hertford.
(Hint: Don’t use the numbers as fractions, think of them as numbers in their own right).

The next stage is on the other side of Black Fan Road. Please take care when crossing as the road can be quite busy. You can get to the next stage by entering the woods by the gate next to the large road sign. Alternatively, you may want to enter the woods at the stile at the waypoint listed below and have a look at the wildlife in the pond. Take the path through the woods to the left and you will end up in the right place.

At the second location you are looking for a little helper who will tell you where to find the final cache a short distance away. Red has become a bit of a hermit in his old age and doesn't like going out much so please don't try and remove him from where he is sat.
Use the numbers written on his front to complete the following coordinates:
N 51' 47.xxx W 000' 10.xxx
Highest number first!

The cache itself is a small ammo box containing a log book and pencil, various goodies, originally our Discovery Travel Bug (now stuck in Germany), and obviously whatever else people choose to leave.

Hopefully, once the regular cachers have found the final stage of this cache, we can all use it as a travel bug exchange. The “Hertford TB Hotel and Geocoin Bank” is sorely missed and hopefully this one will prove not to be too far away for people.

From here you can take the Cole Green Way to Hertford and beyond, follow “Green Lane” through the woods to Panshanger Aerodrome and on towards the many caches that are around Digswell, or cut through the south of the town towards Stanborough, possibly via the Commons Nature reserve which is worth a visit.

Parking is possibly best in Holwell Hyde, just off Cole Green Lane, or alternatively Morrisons is just down Black Fan Road and they do quite a good breakfast!

Happy Caching!
