Geocache Description:

This is a micro cache and dash located just of the south bound side of St, Rt, 21. It is named after the Schwarzenbach family who were prominent in the brewey business from 1857 until prohabition took its toll in the 1920's. Joseph Schwarenbach founded the first brewery in Germania Pa, in 1857. In 1895 son James, along with his brothers opened the Schwarzenbach brewery in Hornellsville which today is known as just the City of Hornell, the name was shortened in 1906. Son August opened the third Schwarzenbach brewery in Galeton, Pa. in 1902. James as well as many other prominent families from Hornellsville had cottages on nearby Loon lake. He was a key figure in getting what was one of the first concrete roads in this part of the state built. This road connected Hornell to Wayland and made travel to Loon lake much easier. James died in 1925 and a large section of this road was dedicated to him as "The Schwarzenbach Highway". Today it is part of state route 21. In 1927 his friends had a spring house constructed as a memorial to him. This spring house was once a well used stopover for travelers to have a cool drink of water during their travels. You can't get spring water there today but the memorial spring house is still intact and in good condition having been refurbished not too long ago. Being a collector of Schwarzenbach memorabila I used a small piece of it to construct the container for this cache. It is a porcelin stopper from a Hornellsville Schwarzenbach bottle. Schwarzenbach memorabilia is highly collectible around these parts and can be found with the New Youk town names of Hornellsville, Hornell, Wayland, Dansville, Addison and I've been told Corning, altough I have never seen it from there. If any cachers have simular interset in any such memorabilia feel free to contact me as I'm always interested in buying or trading. The cache itself is not located on or in the spring house so there is no need to probe it. Bring a pencil or pen and please return container exactly as found.
