Geocache Description:

Galgbacken,the gallows hill, location of two beautiful runestones.

The Lake Mälaren region close to Stockholm has been home to mankind for thousands of years. Bronze age people and the vikings left most of those traces, that we still can find today. Remember: at the times the Vikings steered their ships over the lakes, the water level was several meters higher, so what today appears as small hill far from the beach was an island at those times. At many places you can still see the old beach line, if you just look closely. One of those places is where this cache is located. The name Galgbacken (gallows hill) most likely came to be much later, but there are speculations that this might be the site of an imporant ting place, where people met e.g. to hold court. Another proof for this is the name Tingsstaden, for a settlement just a few hundret meters further southeast.

Today you only see a little hill surrounded by meadows, but when the water level was several meters higher you could approach it from two sides by boat. On top of the hill to very big runestones where erected close to each other around the years 1000-1100. Those stones on a small plateau, and the old trees around, give the place almost a magic touch!

Maybe this hill is the true Tingsstaden, the Ting Place?
