Geocache Description:

“Pedal to the Metal” Trilogy – Part 1

General information.

A series of 3 caches hidden along a cycle route which takes in a few local sites of industrial history. The trail begins at Tondu Ironworks, a once hugely important source of employment for the area and responsible for many of the traditional stone workers houses found locally. You will be following an old (now removed) railway line (which has now been adopted as part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network route 4) through what is presently an attractive nature reserve, past the still active opencast mine of Parc Slip, then on to Bedford Parc in Cefn Cribbw. Here the ruins of industry range from ironworks and brickworks to collieries and mines thanks to the vision of John Bedford in the late 18th Century.

The distance between part 1 and part 3 is just over 6km and designed to be an enjoyable 12km day out on bikes, but can also be an ambitious hike on foot. Alternatively it is possible to do all 3 in isolation with a short walk from recommended parking coordinates for each.

We’d love our fellow geocachers to take up the true challenge and cycle this route. When doing this we strongly advise you to stick to the tarmac trail at all times between caches and take care when crossing roads. Your GPS may contradict this at times due to twists and turns in the trail but we promise you’ll get there without off-road detours! All 3 caches are to be found just off the main cycle route so please beware of “muggles” especially at Part 1. It is possible to start from either Part 1 or Part 3, although the car park at Part 3 is locked at 5pm until 10am the following day.

If you do complete the Trilogy on bike or by hiking we would love you to post some photos to prove your adventure! There is a monument between Parts 1 & 2 commemorating a mining disaster which would be a perfect place to pose.

Part 1 information.

The cache is a small plastic container hidden near the entrance to the parking area. The heritage centre is open weekdays and it is possible to request a tour of the ironworks site if you wish.

Brave cyclists after discovering Part 1 should start their journey on a zig-zag path just to the left of the main ironworks building and follow that to a gravel path leading to waypoint 1 (N51.32.786 W003.36.068). At WP1 you can now follow the main cycle route to the other cache sites.

We have graded each individual cache as easy, but obviously the difficulty rating will increase to medium/hard if done as a trilogy on bike or foot.
