Historic lime kiln and quarry with a hobo hangout. Mainly flat walk
in, jogging stroller accessible.
This two-part cache showcases a shaft lime kiln with limestone
quarry, and a rock outcropping used as a hobo hangout. The hobos
would jump the train as it slowed on the Melville hill curve before
entering Orangeville station. The abandoned rail siding, to the
west of the tracks south of 109, makes for a nice walk through a
meadow without having to walk the railway tracks. The kiln's
history has been forgotten, and if anyone can add to the details
please do. I believe it started with the arrival of the railway in
1871 and was closed by the early 1900's. The kiln has been degraded
over the years by people using it as a booze spot. Please trash out
any beer bottles the teens have left. The first location is a
"Micro" sized film canister with the co-ordinates to the final
regular sized cache. Once you have found the first location follow
the trail back to the building foundation, then turn left. The
cache is not on the kiln itself. Lots of hiding spots, may need
clues.
