Swan’s Arch is a local brick landmark with an odd history.
In 1898 Henry Charles Swan, an eccentric solicitor in Devonport, purchased a block of land in Henderson. In about 1901 he told his friends and acquaintances he was going to sail around the world in his yacht Awatea. He instead sailed to this former tributary of Henderson Creek where he lived as a recluse aboard his yacht for the next thirty years. During this time he built the brick arch as well as two cellars to store fruit from his orchard and to house his book collection.
In the 1990’s the arch was strengthened and restored and is now the focal point of this little park.
The cache is a 400 ml sistema with green camo tape and contains a logbook and small trading items.
The published co-ordinates will take you to a sign showing the above photograph. This is the waypoint for the cache.
Using the nearby dedication plaque calculate the bearing and distance to the cache.
Find the bearing (true) by calculating the sum of the last two digits of the year and multiplying by the number of JPs listed. Deduct the day of dedication.
Find the distance (in metres) by multiplying the number of members with 1 initial by the number of members with 2 initials by the number of members with 3 initials.
