Geocache Description:

Eng: The Fortress of Saint Maria of Arrábida is part of the fortresses of the 17th century that start in Setúbal and go until the Fortress of Baralha, near Espichel Cape. It was built according to the defensive war plan against Spain instituted by the king D. João IV in 1676, during the regency of prince D. Pedro and it aimed to defend the land from arab pirates who used to come to assault the nearby convent, committing robberies and arresting the monks of Arrábida as well as to protect the fishermen and all the ones who disembarked in the Portinho to visit " God mother in the Convent ". The fortress also gave shelter to the people who needed to escape from the furious sea. The construction started in 1676 was known as " Platform of Saint Maria of Arrábida ". In 1735, it was already quite ruined, broken in three parts and without artillery that worked, so in 1749 it was rebuilt since its foundations. Due to the earthquake of 1755 and to the lack of maintenance in the previous years, it had to be repaired again, having these repairs finished in 1798. From 1855 to 1914 the fortress was rented to a particular who made it habitable. In 1932 the fortress was offered to Sebastião Leal da Gama and it was used as a beer house and later as an inn. The definitive installation of Saint Maria of Arrábida Inn only became a reality when the poet Sebastião da Gama got sick in 1936 and a long stay in the area of Arrábida was advised to him.The old fortress became possession of the Natural Park of Arrábida in 1979 and it has been adapted as an Oceanographical museum since 1991. Being in the continuation of the Sado estuary, the coast of Arrábida is an important area of eggslaying and raising of diverse sea species with high economic interest such as spider-crabs, rays, cuttlefish, soles, etc.
Warning : Be careful with the children because the wall is very low, so there is the danger of fall.
