Geocache Description:

This cache replaces version 1, which had to be archived due
to muggles. Devil's Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale is known nationwide as bikers' meeting place, especially at weekends and bank holidays, when parking on A683 by the bridge on the east bank of the river is for MOTORCYCLES ONLY. However, there is free car parking on a lane off the other side of A683 and also on the west bank of the river, directly off A65.

Devil's Bridge is a three arched 14th century bridge that spans the river Lune, and is so-called because of a legend that pops up at various places in Britain. It was said that a woman was separated from her cow when the river ran high, so she made a pact with the Devil. He was to build a bridge across the river and would have the soul of the first living thing to cross the bridge. The woman threw a piece of bread across the bridge and her dog ran after it. The devil was so distraught because all he got was the soul of a dog that he jumped into the river from the bridge.

Nowadays, the river near to the bridge is used for sub-aqua diving in the winter months and by canoeists at other times of year. The area is popular for summer picnics too, but it's main claim to fame is as a stopping place for bikers. There is usually a refreshments van on the bridge, and there are toilets by the west bank car park. If you use these, you may show your appreciation of the facilities by dropping your spare change into the donation box outside the toilets!

If you find the cache and own a motorbike, it would be great if you could post a picture of your bike here!

Note for wheelchair users: Access to this new cache is via a gate which is accessible, but it will depend on how soft or muddy the ground is and on the type of wheelchair as to how far you will want to venture onto the grass. Certainly after a good spell of dry weather there should be no problem crossing the grass from the gate to the cache location.

Kirkby Lonsdale Town Council gave permission for this cache provided cache hunters did not cause any damage - I'm sure you good cachers will take care!

The cache contains a log book and a few small swaps - bring your own pen and please leave small items only.

Enjoy your visit, and if you are a car driver - THINK BIKE! If you're a biker - have fun and RIDE SAFELY!
