Geocache Description:

On the red fox trail. At one time the Red Fox Trail was the main road between Virginia & Kentucky. See the parking coordinates below. If you have one, water your horse at the watering trough.

Sandstone rocks are sedimentary rocks made from small grains of the minerals quartz and feldspar. They often form in layers It was underneath the ocean! A lot has changed since then. The outer skin of the earth – both land and sea – rides on gigantic “plates”. Over millions of years, these moving plates collide with one another to form spectacular mountains.Given enough time, millions of years generally, all mountains crumble. High jagged peaks become low rounded hills. Finally, mountains wear away to become soil on plains, sand on beaches, or sediments in oceans.

****TYPES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCK****

1. Sandstone: sand grains cemented together

2. Shale: clay particles smaller than sand

3. Conglomerate: mostly quartz pebbles cemented together

4. Limestone: made of calcium carbonate often deposited by sea life

5. Dolomite: very much like limestone but with more magnesium in it

6. Coal: composed of the remains of plants and animals

The Formation of Sedimentary Rock

What makes mountains crumble? The erosion of rain, wind, and ice wear away mountains. Water gets into the cracks in rocks and pushes the cracks wider as it expands with both heat and cold. Water also dissolves some minerals, washing them out of the rocks. Eventually, the rocks crack and split off. Some crash down the mountain as boulders, others move only a tiny bit as clay or quartz particles.

Killing Rock is a group of three Sandstone rocks wiith Quartz pebbles in them , The fact that the pebbles are present makes the rocks conglomerates that appear to be gray in color with the white quartz being visable

On May 14, 1892 seven people left Elkhorn Kentucky. Three rode in a wagon, three people followed the wagon and one person was leading the way. They were traveling on the old Fincastle Trail and had just left Pound Gap when a barrage of gunfire rang out from the right side of the road from behind a large rock now known as the Killing Rock. After the shooting was over, five people and two horses lay dead on the trail.

There are many stories about Marshall, also known as Doc Taylor and The Red Fox.Dr. M. B. Taylor, better known as the Red Fox, was executed on the gallows at Wise, VA, he had already become a legendary character. Being the mystic, preacher, herb doctor, revenue officer and assassin that he was, it is little wonder stories of his activities are yet told throughout the mountain empire which sits astride the Kentucky - Virginia border.
