Geocache Description:

A pleasant and easy 15 minute walk to a picturesque waterfall in Auckland City.

The Oakley Creek waterfall is the only significant waterfall within Auckland City. This 6 metre high waterfall is considered one of the must-see natural sights in the city.
Oakley Creek, also known as Te Auaunga, flows through Mt Roskill, Owairaka, Mt Albert, Avondale and Waterview for around 15 kilometres. It is the most natural stream left in the city. The waterfall is situated within the Oakley Creek Esplanade, a reserve that runs alongside Great North Road. The reserve entrance is at the Great North Road/Western Motorway Interchange. The reserve is 1 - 2km in length, winding its way along the scenic stream, complete with the picturesque waterfall, native bush, and the occasional mini-rapids. The reserve is historically, ecologically and geologically valuable. It is home to a great variety of plant and bird life. The Friends of Oakley Creek are restoring the ecology of the area around the stream. Their activities include stream bank planting, plant releasing and weed removal.
The Oakley Creek Walkway is dedicated to the memory of Beverly Price, an accomplished mountaineer and tramper, who campaigned to turn the creek into a reserve and walkway. Tragically, she died in the Mt Erebus Plane Crash.

There are a number of entrances to the reserve, most of which would give an easy walk to the waterfall. Great North Road is extremely busy at most times, and there is no parking on this road. The works being carried out for the motorway tunnel make this road even more difficult at present. We suggest parking in Alford St where there is a lights controlled pedestrian crossing, or at one of the entrances on the eastern side of the reserve..

The cache is a 400 ml sistema with camo tape, containing logbook and small trading items. The walkway is very popular with dog walkers, joggers, etc so watch for muggles approaching rapidly.
