Geocache Description:

Welcome to Scott County, VA! The Scott County Tourism Committee is placing caches throughout the county to highlight certain points of interest and historical sites. For this hunt you'll be looking for an ammo can.

The Wilderness Road Blockhouse served as a gathering point for settlers bound to Kentucky during the late 1700's and into the 1800's. The pioneers would wait there until there was a large party to go on safely through Indian territory. It was the starting point of the Wilderness Road to Kentucky.

The original blockhouse was built before 1778 by John Anderson near the North Fork of the Holston River in Carter's Valley. It served as the Anderson family home, and was a haven for neighbors when there was threat of attack by the natives.

Built in 2003, the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Association based this replica that now stands at Natual Tunnel State Park on one that still stands in Canada. A Blockhouse is a fortified building, with the top story wider than the lower. The chimney is built within the structure so that attackers would not be able to tear down the chimney and enter through the opening. There are openings in the overhanging story that allow for firing down upon anyone who approached the building closely. Small window openings serve as firing ports and also let in light without being large enough for an enemy to pass through them.

This should be a fun cache for the kids. There is a short walk through the field behind the Blockhouse to get to the cache. Once you get to the cache site you will discover a beautiful breathtaking view of the valley while overlooking Rye Cove.

A Special "Thank You" to Natural Tunnel State Park for allowing us to place this cache. We hope that you'll enjoy your visit to our county and hope that you'll come back soon! Happy Caching!
