This is part of a series of caches in the Poole/Broadstone area based upon areas with lakes, ponds and puddles! Some are places that most people will be aware of and then there will be those that even we, before Google Earthing, were completely oblivious of!
Due to the nature of the location of these caches, we do stress to keep a good eye on your children whilst they are near the water's edge. Saying this, a lot of these ponds give you the opportunity to feed the ducks and swans, so plenty of fun to be had – but be safe!
Ham Common lies within the Hamworthy area in the west of the Borough of Poole. It is located along the northern shoreline of Poole Harbour, and is boarded to the north by Rockley Caravan Park, and to the west by Hamworthy Royal Marine base. Other names for the site include Rockley Point and Hamworthy Lake.
Ham Common SSSI covers a total of 41 hectares, however 9 hectares of this forms Ham Hill which is located to the north of Ham Common and is enclosed in the Marine Base. The remaining 32 hectares covers the area known as Ham Common, 24 hectares of which is heathland or bog, the remaining being open water and scrub.
This site comprises the workings and immediate surroundings of a disused clay quarry. The central clay pit has flooded to form the lake.
Ham Common was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) on the 11th November 1987, and is also a Local Nature Reserve ( LNR ).
The cache is a 35mm film case (sorry – nothing fancy) – hidden off of the main path down an incline to the pond edge. If you take the path down by the dog ‘bin’ it will take you to the best view of this part of the pond but taking the next path down will take you to the cache quicker.
Whilst here, make sure you walk on further to the larger of the two ponds which has another ‘beach’ to explore.
Grabbing the cache is unfortunately not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs but is only around 50 feet away so hopefully someone can grab and then bring it up to the main path.
