Geocache Description:

Cache will take you near the site of an old fort. The bronze plaque was placed in 1908 by the property owner, General John A. Wiley who had found traces of the timbers from the structure along the waterway and wished to keep the memories of the this area alive. In 1943 the D.A.R. took over the site and in 1961 the property was transferred to the Venango County Historical Society. The cache is NOT in the hedges.

Franklin had the distinction of having four forts erected by three governments. Fort Machault was built by the French and Fort Venango was a British fortification. The United States built Fort Franklin to protect settlers in NW PA and then built the Garrison, a sturdy, story and a half high log house fortified with pickets. The Garrison later served as a jail. Four PA Historical & Museum Commission signs have been placed near the sites of each of these forts: Fort Franklin at the corner of Franklin Ave. & 13th streets; Fort Venango & Fort Machault at the corner of Elk & 8th streets and the Old Garrison sign is at the corner of Liberty & 10th streets.
