Overlooking Grindstone Creek atop a bluff, the Capen Park Cache is considered to be one of the original stashes in the Columbia area. The first version was placed by JoshGray in January of 2002 but disappeared that December. Local geocachers brought the cache back soon afterward. Five years and seven months later, weather and disrepair took their toll until archival was unavoidable. When retrieved in the hopes of a second revival, not much remained. The contents (some torn-out log pages and trinkets) had been exposed to the elements for nine months.
Given the view and well-worn dirt paths, a return was inevitable. An ammo box with the remnants of version 2.0 and a few other goodies was placed in April of 2009. Many signed (and drew many cool doodles in) the original logbook. Some visitors came upon the container by accident and left amusing anecdotes. Alas, history seemed to repeat itself when the cache went missing. It was later recovered in another location; however, erosion at the hiding place made the approach hazardous. Capen Park Cache would have to move once again.
You are seeking a small tupperware box. Stick to the trails, and avoid any steep slopes or standing too close to the cliff's edge; neither will help you find the geocache! Please replace the cache (and camouflage) as found. As always, bring a pen or pencil just in case the one in the cache grew legs and walked away. (How it escaped is an entirely different matter!)
Parking is available off old highway 63 (Grindstone Nature Area entrance) or Rock Quarry Road (Capen Park entrance). The former is closer and both provide a decent, scenic walk. Please take some time to enjoy the park while you're here - there are numerous activities available throughout the year (including rock climbing), and some of the views are definitely worth it.
Congratulations to Arthur & Trillian for being the first to find!
