Geocache Description:

Cache is located in a 35mm film canister. Pay special attention to the cache name to help with this find. Please be careful to replace cache as found.

European settlers first began to arrive on Hatteras Island in the 1700s, mostly from other colonies in Virginia and North Carolina. Kinnakeet, or Avon, was the first to receive a land grant in 1711 and most of the island's population was centered around this village.

By the end of the Revolutionary War, more people began moving over to Hatteras Island from the mainland and population began to spread out, although sparsely, along the island.

Other newcomers were the victims of shipwrecks and many decided to stay. Descendants from those shipwrecked carry on the longtime island names, such as Austin, Oden, Gray, Etheridge, Scarborough, Willis and O'Neal.
