Geocache Description:

Cache is located at Otatara Scenic Reserve, off Dunns Road. Park at the car park almost opposite the Four Square. The cache is about 80m from the car park. Cache is a 1 litre green screw-top. Contains log book, pencil and a few small items for trading. (The site images towards the bottom of the page show you what you are looking for!) There is a toilet and a picnic shelter at the car park. There were a few brambles nearby when the cache was placed.

A well graded, gravel track leads you through the Otatara Scenic Reserve bush remnant. The track is 2291m long and is quoted to take about 45 minutes.
Dominated by the canopy species of totara and matai, this remnant is representative of the vegetation that would have covered much of Otatara.
The Otatara Scenic Reserve is the largest surviving remnant of the forest that once covered the Otatara area before the 20th Century. In 1938 the reserve was protected from further milling and, as a result, a few pockets of impressive unmilled trees remain within the reserve.
A mosaic of forest communities, from manuka shrubland to mature mixed podocarp forest, are contained in the reserve and a canopy of totara, matai, lemonwood, pokaka and occasional rimu can be found.
