St Thomas
a Becket, Pucklechurch
Pucklechurch is located near the Bristol Ring Road (A4174). It
is at the top of an escarpment, with fine views towards the
Cotswolds, about four miles (6 km) east. The village can be clearly
seen from the M4 motorway, about a mile to the north.
There are over 45 buildings in the village dating from the 17th
- 18th century. Behind the Star Inn is the site of an ancient royal
villa, where King Edmund I of England was murdered by exiled robber
Liofa on May 26, 946 AD. In 950 King Eadred gave 25 units of land
at ‘Pucelancyrcan’ to the Abbey of Glastonbury
The most notable ancient structure in Pucklechurch is the St
Thomas à Becket Church built over 700 years ago in commemoration of
St. Thomas of Canterbury who was murdered in his cathedral in 1170.
The church construction began fifty years following his murder and
was dedicated to St Thomas upon its completion. The Church of St.
Thomas à Becket has a blocked Norman doorway but is typical of a
large 13th Century church.
The gates to the church are guarded by twin oaks and there
exists an old square sundial over the church porch. Within the
church is the 13th century chancel arch, spreading almost the whole
width of the nave and ornamented with beautiful foliage on the
capitals. The nave arcade is 14th century; the floors are paved
with old tombstones, and the roof has fine old timbers.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I
would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he
can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid
duplication
