Geocache Description:

Take the bumpy road just before the entrance to Big Beach where you see the open pipe gate.

Here on Black Sand Beach you will be right next to a large cinder cone called Pu’u Ola’i or Red Hill. Pu'u Ola'i is a 360 foot weathered volcanic cone that is dormant. Cinder cones are a simple type of volcanic structure that are formed from particles and blobs of lava that come out of a single vent. The lava has gas trapped in it and as it is blown violently into the air, it breaks into small fragments that cool and solidify and fall as cinders around the vent to form a cone. You will notice that part of this cinder cone has broken away and fallen. Maui suffered an earthquake a couple of years ago and more rocks fell. It is not safe to walk in the area marked off with the sign because the cone is not completely settled and rocks still fall. At the base of the Pu'u Ola'i are lava formations and tidepools. Enjoy the beach and the ocean but don’t walk next to the hill.
