Access cache by way of Ocotillo Nature Trail either from Skyline road or NMSU trail head. The hike is much easier and less prickly if approached from the College trail head and walk up the canyon bottom. Beware of snakes and catclaw. Long sleeves and long pants recommended.
The cache site is an old dry weather camping site used by my husband when he was a kid in the early 70's. When you find it you will understand the term "dry weather camping". The neighborhood explorers would load up all their camping gear on a deer buggy and haul it to the site. Most parents would not allow their 9-12 year olds to attempt such adventure unsupervised in this day and time.
In celebration of my 50th birthday, three of my childhood friends joined me in Carlsbad for a weekend of fun, relaxation and adventure. This cache is filled mostly with items reflecting the Dutch influence we experienced while growing up in Pella, Iowa. We also included items from our weekend birthday party.
None of us live in Pella today. Tanya came by car from Taos, stopping in Albuquerque to pick up Cheryl who flew in from Denver. A scenic route to Roswell via Capitan provided perfect timing to make a pitstop at the Roswell airport to pick up Donna who came from Des Moines, Iowa. Final destination...my home in Carlsbad.
Our weekend included several bottles of wine, an assortment of Dutch pastries, homemade icecream and foods from my favorite restaurants in Carlsbad. An afternoon at the day spa balanced out an array of activities in our backyard located on the beautiful Pecos River...a boat ride, canoeing, rowing, and swimming with Bandit, the dog. A birthday fire pit party along with cycling, jeep riding and hiking to this nostalgic cache site highlighted the celebration.
