This is the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History.
Formally "The Atomic Museum"
I like the old name better.
This is a Redstone rocket, similar to what carried the first American into space.
This one was a weapon.
You have to use your imagination to see the tiny black Mercury capsule 60 feet above you.
Freedom-7 was its name.
All Mercury flight vehicles were named and given the number (7) by the astronauts themselves.
The (7) represented the number of astronaut candidates who were part of project Mercury.(our first Astronauts-Lucky Seven)
110 candidates washed out.
May 5, 1961,Alan Shepard roared into space a ballistic trajectory suborbital flight—a flight which carried him to an altitude of 116 statute miles and to a landing point 302 statute miles downrange.
Flight time: 15 minutes,28sconds
In a strange twist of fate Alan Shepard ,Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa were slotted to fly Apollo 13,but as it was felt he needed more time to train, he and his crewmates swapped missions with the then crew of Apollo 14 (James Lovell, Ken Mattingly and Fred Haise).
Alan Shepard made three famous quotes:
Tired of waiting for the launch,He yelled "Let's light this candle!"
The the latter quote has since become known among aviators as "Shepard's Prayer."
Tell me what the Shepard's Prayer." was.
"It's a very sobering feeling to be up in space and realize that one's safety factor was determined by the lowest bidder on a government contract".
Read the Tom Wolf book,or rent the 1983 movie.
