St Margaret, Burnham Norton

The church has a Saxon round
tower with the west wall of the original Saxon nave still visible.
In the 13th Century a Carmelite Friary was founded
nearby and it is thought that due to its influence additional
aisles were added to the parish church.
The church possesses many
notable architectural features including an interesting Norman font
and a very rare “wine glass” painted pulpit . A
photographer who was there at the same time as I was said that
he’d only seen one other similar example. The pulpit was
donated in 1450 by John and Katherine Goldale (they are depicted on
the sides nearest the screen). The remaining panels show St
Ambrose, St Gregory, St
Jerome and
St Augustine.

In the churchyard, in the south
west corner, is the grave of Richard Woodget (1846-1928), Master
and Captain of the Cutty Sark from 1885 – 1895. His
grave is covered by a white stone anchor

The cache
You’re looking for a 35mm
film canister. The cache has a log book but no pen so please bring
one with you.
The cache location is available
24/7. However, whilst a cache and dash is possible, there is lots
of interest in the church so I suggest only doing during daylight
hours so you can make a proper visit.
Church Micro Series
If any body would like to expand
to this series please do, could you please let sadexploration know
first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid
duplication.
