Geocache Description:

This is an easy one to get to and an ideal way to break up your drive east or west. Park your car find a cache and have some lunch.

Stratford is a town 232km's from Melbourne. It is situated on the river Avon, which was named by Gippsland explorer, Angus McMillan.

Stratford was the first permanent settlement in Gippsland and serviced the early gold rush in nearby Dargo as well as further afield in Omeo. Old walking tracks can still be seen and used between Briagolong (to the north) and Dargo.

The name "Stratford" has two theories as to where it came from. The most probable - that it evolved from the Old English words stræt (a street, more specifically a Roman road) and ford (a river-crossing).

The other theory behind the name Stratford, is the connection with the Avon river and Stratford-on-Avon from England, William Shakespeare's home town. Local residents have embraced this connection and Stratford is now a "Stratford-Sister City" to other "Stratfords" in the world.

Stratford holds a Shakespeare Festival every year which runs for a week. The start of the festival is the Village Fair which is held on the first Sunday of May each year, an experience well worth seeing!

Stratford has numerous coffee shops and cafes, a cellar door for a local winery, Design Gallery, model railway shop, a pub, parks and playgrounds for car travellers to break their journey.

The starting co-ordinates for this hunt begin at a monument to Angus McMillan to commemerate his crossing of the Avon River at Stratford.

The date that Angus crossed the Avon = AB.C.DEFG
