Geocache Description:

KARST

Karst topography is a landscape shaped by the dissolution of a layer or layers of soluble bedrock, usually carbonate rock such as limestone or dolomite. Due to subterranean drainage, there may be very limited surface water, even to the absence of all rivers and lakes. Many karst regions display distinctive surface features, with sinkholes or dolines being the most common. However, distinctive karst surface features may be completely absent where the soluble rock is mantled, such as by glacial debris, or confined by a superimposed non-soluble rock strata. Some karst regions include thousands of caves, even though evidence of caves that are big enough for human exploration is not a required characteristic of karst.

KARLUKOVSKI KARST

The region is situated in the area of the ForeBalkan, near the town of Cherven Bryag in the north and the valley of the River Kosmatitsa and the Iskar Gorge in the south. It is situated in a hilly karst region, indented by gorge-like river valleys. The rock base is composed of Triassic and Jurassic limestones, in many places revealed as rock wreaths, walls, rock plateaus, and caves. A great part of the region is occupied by open grass areas grown with thermophytic grass communities dominated by Dichantium ischaemum, Poa bulbosa, and Chrysopogon gryllus. The bushes consist of Syringa vulgaris, Paliurus spina-christi, Prunus spinosa, etc. There are small areas with mesophytic meadows grown with Festuca pratensis, Poa sylvicola, Alopecurus pratensis, Lolium perenne, Agrostis stolonifera, as well as bushes consisting mainly of Carpinus orientalis. The largest part of the forest habitats is covered by the deciduous forests dominated by mixed oak forests of Quercus cerris and Q. frainetto. Here and there the forests are interspersed with Carpinus orientalis and Q. pubescens.

PROHODNA CAVE

This is a cave near the village of Karlukovo. Its denomination has remained because of the two withstanding entrances with height of 24 m and 40.50 m. It is long 265 m. It is located 2 km to the north of the village on the road to Lukovit. Dry one-staged mountain shaped through the Quaternary along transversal failure by the River Iskar at the upper stratum of the limestone of from the Maastrichtian Stage. It is light from the high entrances and the two openings of the ceiling - Oknata. It is inhabited by swallows. Its floor is covered with alluvial soil, ribbed gravel and blocks of a collapse as a consequence of a frosty weathering. It has been inhabited by people during the Neolite and Eneolite. An awl from wild boar tusk, awls from bones of birds, flinty scrapers and knives, various ceramics and traces of burnt wheat and millet have been found at the excavation of its right side. It is accessible at any time.
