Geocache Description:

"Gateway" to Cheese country

The cache is small, it contains only a pencil and a log book.

It is not necessary to enter the building to log this cache but if you wish to trade swag, there is a regular container inside located behind the volunteers desk. Just tell them that you are geocaching and would like the cache. There is a copy of "Depots of Green County" book for the FTF inside, just take the "coupon" from the cache inside to collect it.

The building entrance is near the pair of copper cheesemaking kettles. Standing outside is a restored 1951 Milwaukee Road Ribside Caboose. The Depot was moved to that location in 1995. It was built back in 1857 - and over the years the freight room was witness to many tons of cheese that were shipped out from Green County.

Step back into the late 1800's into an authentic cheese factory relocated from an area farm where it sat untouched since 1917. All the original equipment can be viewed in this factory that was once used for producing Brick, Swiss, and Limburger cheese using the milk from the 40 cows at the Imobersteg Farm, just over the border into Illinois.

The center is open daily 9am - 4pm from April through October. Please sign the guestbook near the entrance, and in the comments indicate you are here geocaching.

In addition to public restrooms, the visitor center area has a wide variety of free brochures, pamphlets, and maps. You’ll find information about restaurants, museums, breweries, shopping, events, and a variety of other tourism-related activities.

If you would like to take a tour of the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, admission is $2. Knowledgeable volunteer guides are available, or you may choose to listen to the informative self-guided audio tour.

Permission for placement of this cache has been obtained by Green County Tourism.

Congrats to Da Bloodhound and K Spud on the FTF!
