Geocache Description:

Cache location can be a busy area at certain times of the day so some stealth will be required. There is ample free parking near the cache site but you may need to cross a street to access the cache. You are looking for a nano with only enough room for a log so bring your own writing utensil. Please replace cache container exactly as you found it.

Melvil Dewey was born in Adams Center, NY, in 1851. There is a N.Y.S. historical marker a short distance northeast of the cache location commemorating Dewey’s place of birth on the front lawn of a private home. The cache is NOT at the marker but if you wish to read the marker please respect the privacy of the home owners and stay on the sidewalk. To be safe please walk to the corner traffic light and use the cross walk.

Dewey is considered to be the pioneer of American librarianship and is best known for the development of the decimal classification system that is used in public and school libraries today. He also founded the first institution in the United States for the instruction of librarians, launched the idea of tax-supported public libraries and established the system of “traveling libraries” in rural areas where there were no local libraries.

In 1895, Dewey with his wife, Annie, founded the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, NY as a health resort despite the scorn heaped upon “that darn literary fellow” who thought he could run a summer resort with no bar, no cigar stand, no gambling and no late hours. He built the Lake Placid Club into a four season premier vacation resort which helped to develop Lake Placid into a world famous winter sport destination.

With his son, Godfrey, Dewey was active in promoting and arranging for the 1932 Winter Olympics to be held in Lake Placid. He was chairman of the New York State Winter Olympics Committee for the 1932 games. Dewey traveled to Florida in 1926 and established a southern branch of the Lake Placid Club, where he died in 1931.
