Geocache Description:

This cache is a simple 4" Lock-N-Lock with the usual swag. The location is more interesting...Be sure to walk up the road to the big pine and look down into the swamp. A large beaver lodge and extensive dam system is visible. We’ve seen the beaver several times from the paved road at dusk.

HENDERSON

When John Mullan came through present Mineral County from 1859 to 1861 building the military road that bears his name, he reached the confluence of the St. Regis River and 12 Mile Creek. He discovered that it would not be feasible to build the road along the St. Regis River. Instead, he turned up 12 Mile Creek to what is now known as "Camel's Hump. The Henderson post office opened in 1904 and was discontinued in 1930. Edward Donlan and Ben W. Henderson moved their mill (employing 50 men) to Henderson in 1918 and it eventually became the Mann Lumber Company until its closure in 1928. Most of the lumber processed came from the area, with salvage timber available after the 1910 fire. Remnants of the concrete dam used in sawmill operations are still visible and can be reached on foot at N 47° 21.385 W 115° 17.286. The photo above was taken from approximately the top of the west bound off ramp facing towards the cache. As always when exploring an old home/town site, be careful of rusty metal and other antiquities lurking in the grass. Information and photo courtesy of Mineral County Historical Society.
