The Meggernie Estate is a gem tucked out of the way in the Scottish Highlands within Glen Lyon, Scotland’s longest, loneliest and loveliest glen. It is not so easy to reach unless driving which I’m sure is all part of the charm. Access is by the long road up Glen Lyon from Fortingall some 13 miles distance or over the mountains from Loch Tay via the Ben Lawyers visitor centre. The scenery via the mountain route is stunning. Several of the mountains in the neighbourhood of the glen rise to an altitude of over 3,500 feet, and are familiar to every devoted Scottish mountain-climber. The glen has played a colourful part in Scotland’s history and is rich in flora and fauna. Do remember to take some care driving along the glen road as the wildlife likes to get up close and personal.
The Meggernie Scout Centre lies within the Estate on the south bank of the River Lyon at Bridge of Balgie. The Scout Centre is a former farmhouse converted by the Trustees of the Donald Searle Outdoor Activities Charitable Company and leased by The Scout Association. The remainder of the farm steading is still used and the whole forms part of the Meggernie Estate owned by the Trustees of Meggernie Castle. The Centre provides an opportunity for Scouts and other organisations to experience and gain some understanding of a working Estate and the factors that help to shape countryside life.
The cache has been placed close to the entrance to the Meggernie Scout Centre. Do not park here. Park a short distance away over the bridge beside the cafe. Which, for future reference, does fab soup, and the home made plum chutney is yum. Container is a medium lock and lock. If possible I would like as many Scouting swaps as possible please. A few scout related items have been placed in the cache to start you off. You might be lucky and get a warm welcome from Rab and Judith the Centre Wardens as they run around the glen looking after us scouting types.
P.S. You could bag this cache on the way to the place where the trolls live.
